Steamworks Brewing Company opened its door in September 1996 in Durango Colorado . The brewpub-with a 10 barrel brewing system, 20 barrel vessels and seating for some 420 patrons- is today recognized as one of Durango's leading businesses. In 1997, the Great American Beer Festival awarded Steamworks the Gold Medal for Brewing Excellence in the American Amber Lager category for Steamworks' Steam Engine Lager. Since then it won another Gold Medal in 2000, took the Bronze in 2004 and was awarded a World Beer Cup Bronze Medal in 1998. Along with industry specific awards Steamworks has also garnered many awards for promotional pieces, community involvement, design elements, and even landscaping.
